There are a couple of ways that individuals working on their negative self-talk habits can work to identify them. Identifying negative thoughts can be a difficult process. Shifting to a more positive outlook and enhancing positive self-talk can maintain resilience and motivation in doing things they love. Individuals who challenge negative thoughts may be more productive during their time at home as well as at their workplace. They may think they are not worthy of the love and compassion they may receive during the relationship, which can ultimately damage their relationships with others. Individuals who live with negative thoughts continuously may be at risk of failing to show up in relationships. These negative thoughts may become a self-fulfilling prophecy that inhibits their ability to exercise their positive self-talk ability and results in a plethora of self-criticism. When it comes to confidence, being proud of who you are is a vital step towards building resilience and enhancing happiness. Negative self-talk can also impact individual self-esteem. This may be the case for those who are struggling with other forms of psychological disorders where negative self-talk is occurring. These thoughts may contribute to their lack of attending events, and the lack of events they go to may fuel their automatic thought process. The bar chart is either showing the total occurrences (in volume) or the frequency at which the symptom occurs, represented as a % of the total sample. Sure, there is a relationship between the symptom and the stressor, but labeling the column header as relationship is both confusing and misleading. The horizontal bar chart is showing the volume of something, in this case, the occurrence of each symptom relative to the workplace stressor. That said, there is a problem with the section shown above, particularly the column titled Relationship. ![]() ![]() We did spend a lot of time together, at midtown restaurants, in the office, and at his place. I’m not sure Jim Goode and I became friends. They rested in stacks against the wall, the target of the occasional raised leg of an underwalked dog. Jim owned so many of these framed posters that there was no room to hang another in his Greenwich Village townhouse. He had other things to pay for: his pampered mutts, his almost as cosseted dancer boyfriend, Kevin (who looked like a Ganymede come to life from a Renaissance painting), and French advertising posters from the early 1900s. Jim was not about to use his own expense account on anything so unnecessary as a meal (he ate almost nothing, getting through the day on three lunchtime vodka martinis). ![]() No one had clued me into what my responsibilities at Penthouse would be, but I quickly found out that the most important part of my job was taking Jim Goode to lunch, a chore I shared with the rest of the editorial staff.Ĭruising on Penthouse’s oceans of cash, all the editors, even the lowly, just-hired editorial assistant, enjoyed a generous expense account. “HAAAUUUBBNEER” he would boom out, summoning me from my lean-to in the back of the secretarial pool. ![]() (Wikimedia Commons)įrom that day forth, Jim never called me by my first name. “Get out of here, Haubner.” Three-martini lunch. I was pretty sure any talent I had at being charming would fall on stony ground but I had to try I knew Jim had been fired at least once from both Penthouse and Playboy, so I was hoping for a sympathetic ear. Jim did not think this worthy of a reply but kept staring at me. “I’m Gay Haubner, ah, I was the assistant editor at Viva, and ah, Kathy Keeton thought I might fit in better at Penthouse.” I sidled into his office, hugging the wall. “What do you want?” rumbled forth like an early warning vibration from a thundercloud. My new boss was Jim Goode, the executive editor, a scraggly 6’3” man with a bloodhound face who wore the same uniform of Levi’s, faded chambray shirt, and work boots every day, as if it were painted on him. I was now the editorial assistant at Penthouse magazine, foisted on their staff by my old boss Kathy Keeton. If wizards are gods, why do they all look like crusty old dudes? Radagast the Brown in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. It seems clear that Gandalf’s Maia name is Olórin, and possibly that he was reluctant to take up his Istari responsibility and was the last of them to arrive in Middle-earth. But we do have some hints from his notes, as compiled and published by his son and archivist, Christopher Tolkien. Tolkien also never quite settled on all the details of what Gandalf was like as a Maia before he died. Those five Istari were Saruman the White, Gandalf the Grey, Radagast the Brown, and the two “Blue Wizards.” Those two went east of Mordor and were never seen again, and Tolkien declined to give them names or even explain what happened to them, since it had nothing to do with the War of the Ring. Those emissaries were known as the Istari, and the Valar sent five particularly high-ranked ones - Tolkien calls them “chiefs” - to the northwest of Middle-earth in particular, because that was deemed the place where it was mostly likely that Men and Elves could be rallied to oppose Sauron. So with the blessing of Middle-earth’s creator god, the Valar assembled a large group of Maiar to secretly send to Middle-earth. Gandalf the Grey and Saruman the White in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. And since the Valar nearly had to destroy the world to stop Sauron the last time he rose to power, they decided to send some emissaries to Middle-earth to make sure he was kept in check this time around. ![]() But, in the Third Age (that is, sometime after Isildur got his hands on the Ring in the prologue of the Jackson movies), Sauron began to amass power again. The Valar, Middle-earth’s cohort of caretaker gods, retreated from the world thousands of years before the time of The Lord of the Rings, and they took all of their Maiar with them. (Yes, the monster and Gandalf are the same species.) Also, Elrond’s great-great grandmother is a Maia - his family is very complicated. Other Maiar who appear in the Lord of the Rings movies include Saruman, Sauron, and the Balrog. And they’re sort of like angels, in that they are fully divine in origin (not half-human, like a lot of Greek demigods) and can change their form at will. The Maiar are sort of like demigods, in that they serve a higher order of godlike beings, the Valar. In Middle-earth parlance, he’s a creature known as a Maia (plural: Maiar). Gandalf is a divine spirit clothed in a mortal form. Is Gandalf human? Can anyone be a wizard? Read on for everything you were always afraid to ask about everyone’s favorite weed-smoking magic grandpa. I can provide answers to all these questions, because I’m a giant Middle-earth nerd who thinks The Silmarillion is a more enjoyable read than The Lord of the Rings, and pillaged Tolkien’s Unfinished Tales to enhance the accuracy of my own Lord of the Rings Twitter account. Is he, like, human, or what? What happened when he died? What’s the difference between Grey and White? What can wizards do, anyway? And who appointed Saruman president of wizards? But his role in the movies is still full of ambiguity. The real power of McKellen’s performance is that you believe wholeheartedly in Gandalf. Gandalf, the wise, mercurial, mysterious, and occasionally terrifying wizard is arguably more the face of the Lord of the Rings franchise than Frodo, its hero, or Aragorn, its long-lost king. The lack of an origin story didn’t stop audiences from falling in love with Ian McKellen’s Gandalf, who studied Tolkien himself in perfecting his award-winning performance, fixing himself in the hearts of millions of fans. Movies and books are different beasts, and the former can only support so much exposition. Never ever book this company if you love your peace. Hopefully, this review will make some people think because Hire-A-Helper uses 3rd party unreliable movers and won't help you when things go wrong. Just be cautious using this site and book movers DIRECTLY because later if you try to make a claim with your credit company for "quality of service" it will be much more difficult to get your money back. Pay a little extra for qualified movers and save yourself the headache later. Just look at the number of complaints they have against them on the Better Business Bureau website. So Hire-A-Helper stating on their website that "we have the highest quality movers you can book anywhere online" is an absolute joke. We honestly thought we were on some reality show and a camera crew would jump out any minute. So YES, anything larger than a box the guy refused to put on the truck. Not only did Elite Moving Services show up over 2 hours late on the day of the move but one of the guys they sent refused and I can't stress that enough REFUSED to lift anything heavy. They put us in contact with Elite Moving Services, which ended in a horrible experience. What a horrible experience using "HireAHelper" My wife and I used this site to find movers and I wish we went elsewhere. ![]() |
